When it comes to basic computer security measures and procedures, you should take special care to make sure your personal information is not easily accessible by just anyone. Especially if there is more than one person who has access to your computer. Even if this is not the case, you still want to make sure to keep your personal information safe.

If you own and use a laptop, the need to be more careful is significantly greater, especially with laptop theft and identity thefts at an all-time high. Your first line of defense to secure your computer is to use very strong passwords that are easy for YOU to remember but extremely hard for others to guess.

A good place to start to get a secure password is to use a password generator tool. One such tool that comes to mind is RoboForm, which is a great password generator tool and a great tool for storing and remembering online passwords as well.

However, it is not unusual to do such a good job of password-protecting your computer that you lockout yourself. If you can't gain entry to your computer because your password is too secure to block everyone from accessing your information, even you, then there are some ways you can go about recovering your password.

You can follow these steps if you forgot your computer login password:

Begin at the Startup
First, shut down your computer, and then turn it back on again. As soon as your computer begins rebooting, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Be sure to tap it continuously until you arrive at the Advanced Startup Options menu.

Start in Safe Mode
From the Advanced Startup Options menu, you will see the option of starting your computer in Safe Mode. Your computer's safe mode is its most basic mode of operation – basically the skeleton of operation without all the bells and whistles (Internet, optional programs and applications, etc.). Choose the Safe Mode option and your computer will restart accordingly.

Change Your Password
While in Safe Mode, access your Control Panel from the Start menu. Once you're in your Control Panel, you will see the options for changing account settings for each of the "User Accounts" associated with the computer. Navigate to these accounts to change the password associated with the Administrator account or the account that is locked out.

If that does not work, the following method will work if your desktop is just one of a number of user accounts on your computer. If you happen to forget the password associated with the computer itself (as opposed to your desktop), then you can use a computer program that will allow you to bypass the password in order to gain access to your desktop, so you can change the password.

You can find such programs by doing a search online, or by contacting a computer repair tech in your area for additional help.

It can be very frustrating to get locked out of your own computer, and sometimes it takes the effort and help of an expert computer repair tech to reset the password and regain access to your computer again.
